St. John's Church

40.00

St. John's Church, a national historic landmark, is one of the most historically significant landmarks of Richmond and the Church Hill neighborhood. This is the church where Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech, one that emphasized the concept of liberty as an essential right and inspired the colonies to unite against British rule, sparking the American Revolution.

Not only was this the first church built in the city in 1741, it was also the city's first public cemetery, where Edgar Allen Poe's mother is buried, along with other influential Americans such as George Wythe who signed the Declaration of Independence and taught law to Thomas Jefferson, Henry Clay, and John Marshall.
